What Could We Possibly Be Thankful For This Year?

Ever had one of those years?
A year where you ask yourself: What in the world could I possibly be thankful for this year?

There are so many reasons for us to despair: the elections, the condition of the Church in America, global disasters, the widening divide in our nation, and our own unchanging circumstances.
Whatever it is that you’re going through right now, I get it. I really do.
But in two days, no matter how hard we try to avoid it, Thanksgiving will come.

Thanksgiving is a time to regroup…it’s a time to stop and take stock of all the goodness that’s ours in the middle of the chaos. It’s a time to gain back our vertical traction.

This time last year I was a bit on the numb side. It was our first thanksgiving without my father. Even the turkey my mom tried to make that year wouldn’t de-thaw in time.

This year is better but I’m still in the waiting. I’m still single with no prospects for even a date. I’m still hustling trying to sustain my job and grow this ministry. I’m still trying to figure out where I fit into this world. I guess you could say I’m a little behind my life schedule!

But that’s ok, because as I stop and reflect on my life, I am so thankful for these 3 things that never change:

#1 I’m thankful for God’s grace in the face of my failure
Let me tell you a secret: I can’t stand the gap between who I am and who I should be by now. I’ve been a Christian long enough to know the kind of person God wants me to be and the reality is that I don’t measure up to the person I wish I was by now. Which is why I’m so terribly grateful for God’s grace. He gives me favor even when I don’t deserve it. His love is steadfast and endures forever.

#2 I’m thankful for God’s provision in the midst of my need
Ever have times when you can’t put words around your need? Yeah, me too. A few months ago I started praying for help in this ministry. Frankly, I had no idea what I needed, just that I needed. So I started praying with little expectation of an answer. Then one day I got an email from Irina, an international student working on her masters at Trinity International University. She wanted to intern with me. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I said yes. Irina has been God’s provision for me this year. She’s the reason I’m back in the game with a vengeance after a summer off the grid. She has become indispensable to me and a reminder that God is always faithful even when I’m not sure what I need.

#3 I’m thankful for God’s ear the moment I cry out to Him

That God has given us His ear is the most astounding truth in this world. That He hears us and that He cares what we humans have to say and feel. That He never turns us away. That He understands our garbled speech when words don’t come easy. That He allows us to find Him, that He invites us to seek Him. Now that’s more than my brain can comprehend and exactly what my heart needs.

Hey, do you feel the weight of your need today?

How about you start right here? God is always closer than you think. He’s just a whisper away!

PS Won’t you leave a comment and share one thing you’re thankful for this year?
